A 12-month construction project on Route 2A through Williston from the intersection of Bittersweet Circle to the town line with Essex at the Winooski River bridge began this week with the installation of construction signage.
The $2.5 million Vermont Agency of Transportation project includes the creation of a third lane of travel between River Cove Road and Eastview Circle to take turning cars out of the main flow of traffic. Planners fast-tracked federal funds for the project as a “circ alternative” — one of several Chittenden County road projects designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the lieu of the once-planned “circumferential highway” around greater Burlington.
Traffic delays are expected through next September. The road will occasionally be reduced to one-lane during the overnight hours.
The project includes plans to revamp the Route 2A intersections with James Brown Drive and Bittersweet Circle, as well as add a stretch of sidewalk from Morgan Parkway to Eastview Circle.
The road will also be repaved, resurfaced and re-signed and new curbing, drainage and stormwater infrastructure will be installed.
