With a 10th place finish among 20 teams in a tournament Saturday at Otter Valley Union High near Brandon, the Champlain Valley Union High wrestling team returns to the grappling mat Thursday in Milton. Milton High and Spaulding High of Barre will provide the competition. Starting time is 6 p.m.
The Redhawks had some medical issues in their tournament Saturday. Senior Sherman Wood, with more than 100 victories in his career, finished second to Harwood Union’s Josh Kernan in the 135-pound division. According to coach Rahn Fleming, Wood had his jaw displaced during his final match.
“Dr. Rick Marko adjusted Sherman’s jaw after the match allowing him to eat a decent meal,” Fleming wrote in an e-mail.
Kernan is the only Vermont wrestler to defeat Wood.
Senior Stephan Fortin, in the 152-pound class, fought off cold symptoms and some foes to finish fourth.
Jason Marko, also a senior in the 145-pound class, held a 5-0 lead in semifinal competition before being sidelined by a knee injury.
“He was on track to place in his weight class,” wrote Fleming.
On the JV side, wrestlers from 12 schools’ junior varsity teams will descend on Champlain Valley Union High Saturday for a tournament scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m. School doors will open at 8 a.m.
