WINTER REDHAWKS ROUNDUP: CVU team capsules

Dec. 8, 2011

Boys Basketball

Head coach: Scott Bliss, fifth year

Key returning players: Tucker Kohlasch, senior, guard; Brad Bissonette, junior, guard/forward; John Keen, senior, forward/center

2010-2011 record: 7-13

Coach’s outlook: This looks like it could be a fun team to coach this year. There is a great work ethic so far and they have been very unselfish. We are hoping to improve on our season last year.

Girls Basketball

Head coach: Ute Otley, first year

Key returning players: Elana Bayer-Pacht, senior, guard; Remington Donnelly, senior, forward; Lazrin Schenck, senior, forward.

2010-11 record: 17-7 (lost in Division I state championship game)

Coach’s outlook: CVU’s strengths this year will be team depth, with seven returning varsity players and a talented group rising from a 16-4 JV team last year. We have a balanced mix of speed and size that will allow us to play a variety of styles of basketball. The Metro will be very competitive again this year; so the team will have to be disciplined, dedicated and tough.

Wrestling

Head coach: Rahn Fleming, sixth year

Key returning wrestlers: Sam Fortin, senior, 170-pound class; Connor Brown, junior, 152-pound class.

2010-11 record: 10-5

Coach’s outlook: I have enlisted great help with Gunnar Olson, assistant coach. We also have some transfer students — Clark Poston, senior, and Grant Poston, sophomore. One of the nice things is there are 14 weight classes and this year we will be able to legitimately fill 12 of those classes without putting anyone in harm’s way. We could have our best season.

Gymnastics

Head coaches: Carly Rivard, second year; Jillian Womersley, second year.

Key returning gymnasts: Megan Nick, sophomore; Ashley Bachand, senior; Sarah Kinsley, junior; Madison Bourdeau, junior.

2010-11 record: 7-0 (second in the state meet)

Coach’s outlook: We have all of our state meet competitors returning from last year as well as some new faces (Madison Tieso and Sarah Gerry) that will bring new energy to the team — especially on vault and floor. Our focus is to stay healthy and to peak at the state meet. Everyone is very excited about another great season!

Nordic Skiing

Head coach: Sarah Strack

Key returning skiers (boys): Senior Ian Meier, juniors Sean Delaney, Sam Longenbach and Emmett Peterson.

Key returning skiers (girls): Seniors Sienna Searles, Kathrun Maitland, Ellie Stone, Molly Burke, Izzi Unger, juniors Emma Hamilton, Kayla Servin, sophomores Cally Braun and Autumn Eastman.

2010-11 record: Boys, state champions; girls, fourth in the state

Coach’s outlook: We had an outstanding season last year and are thrilled to be returning several key skiers. They are joined by a large group of new freshmen and sophomores, several who skied in Sleepy Hollow’s middle school racing program.
