The Woods at Night

By Delia Beaudry

Grade 3

The fox is watching as the

Snow is falling.

It’s pitch black under the pine trees.

The owl takes flight

Hunting unsuspecting mice.

The fawn with her mother hears the owl screech.

While the wolves howl at the moon at night.

The raccoons are looking for food.

Hoping to get a bite.

The bears snuggle really tight.

Everything seems just right

In the woods

At night.

But in my house

I am in my bed.

My pillow is deep.

My blanket is warm.

I am asleep.

I know I am safe.

I know I am home.

Poetry

By Lauren Parent

Grade 5

The sparkling snow crystals fall from the clouds

Northern lights dancing around the sky

February snowstorms

The freezing world around us

We watch it all from the safe warm comfort of our living room

The warm glowing fire

The nice and toasty blankets

As we watch the snowy outside

We feel happy to be inside

In My Grandfather’s Woods

By Xander Olszewski

Grade 3

In my grandfather’s woods

There is a creek

The creek is like a flute

Playing a gentle song.

The woods are quiet

Except for your voice.

In the night

You can hear crickets,

But only on summer nights.

Some stones sparkle

in the sunlight

Some stones shine like gems.

My Grampa lives in Waterbury

It smells of pine and fresh water

I feel like it is a place

Where I can be free

and wild.

Bats

By Colin Zouck

Grade 5

There once were some bats,

Those bats had a lot of hats,

They tried to look cool,

and they also had a pool,

and now those bats are cats.

Wind

By Shane Skiff

Grade 6

Vermont is known for its cold winters, blessed springs, hot summers and beautiful autumns. I chose to do an acrostic poem on the word winter. I tried to encapsulate as much of the details and feelings that I have during a hardy Vermont winter. I hope you enjoy.

Wind shakes the house

I drink hot chocolate

Numbs the bone

Tons of snow

Enter the void

Roads closed

Williston Poem

By Justin Schaaf

Grade 8

Williston is a place, a truly wonderful space,

You could go anywhere, but nothing could compare,

The wonders of this town, can bring anyone around,

This is the greatest home, because it lets you freely roam,

Our parks are great, with places to run and skate,

The parades and the 4th of July poppers, truly some real show stoppers,

The firemen are nice, our police more than suffice,

This is truly a wonderful town.

By Owen McDermott

Grade 6

I can feel the breeze on a sunny summer day

I can see the dew on a single blade of grass

It is a beautiful thing summer is

The way you are so aware of your surroundings

I feel more connected to everything in nature

It is a feeling above all other

Nature is like a little slice of heaven

It is home to many

It is seen by few

But who is the runner of the forest one asked

I replied with mother nature

And then it hit me

The more people with phones

The less people with nature

So I asked

Why do you have that phone

It is not a time for such thing

but time to connect with nature

Water Bottle

By Riley Erdman

Grade 4

Water bottle, water bottle filled with air

floating through the nice calm Allen Brook

When the wind hits the water bottle

he hears a violin in his head

He sees not a ocean, but another stream

Drifts some more, then he sees a snake

Goes down a river rapid

 hits some rocks

It’s so fast,

he thinks that

 he’s in the past

lands in a big muddy pond

someone comes

 reaches his hand in

 pulls the water bottle out

and recycles him
