CVU hockey teams both home on Saturday

The Champlain Valley Union High hockey teams will be entertaining league foes Saturday at Cairns Arena in South Burlington.

The boys, 4-2-1 after a narrow 2-1 loss at Essex High Saturday, will take on Stowe High at 12:05 p.m. The girls, winless but with a tie, will face off against Hartford High at 5:25 p.m.

But first, there were Wednesday games after the Observer’s press deadline, with the boys home to Spaulding High of Barre and the girls meeting Colchester High at Leddy Arena.

On the boys side, CVU took a 1-0 lead into the third period at Essex (5-1) on a goal by Patrick Pattison, only to have the Hornets respond with two quick scores. Essex netminder Brock Paquette turned aside a late CVU penalty shot among his 19 stops.

Redhawks goalie Greg Talbert made 18 saves.

On Friday, the CVU girls fell 7-0 to Bellows Free Academy at Cairns Arena, despite some 43 saves by Redhawks goalie Laurel Hubbert-Severence. CVU was 0-5-1 following the contest.

CVU gymnasts face break in schedule

Champlain Valley Union High gymnasts had a home meet at Green Mountain Gymnastics in Williston Wednesday night, after the Observer’s press deadline, and then two weeks off before South Burlington High comes to town on Jan. 23.

Last Saturday, the Redhawks travelled to St. Johnsbury Academy and came away with a 127.45 to 96.5 victory over the Hilltoppers.

Junior Megan Nick was the CVU pacesetter with a trio of victories: bars; balance beam and floor exercise. Senior Madison Bourdeau was second to Nick on the beam and floor exercise.

Senior Sarah Gerry and freshman Jackie Casson tied for first place on the vault.
