State meet approaches for CVU gymnasts

The Champlain Valley Union High gymnastics team was scheduled to roll into South Burlington High on Wednesday night for its final tune-up before the Feb. 13 Vermont State meet at Essex High and another chance at unseating the state champion Hornets.

On Friday, the Redhawks scored a 121.85-106 victory over the Galloping Ghosts at Randolph High. CVU was paced by winners Sidney Hilker (vault), Ashley Bachand (beam) and Amanda Holman (floor exercise).

Hilker added a runner-up finish on the bars, and Madison Bourdeau a third on the beam.


Alpine skiers to compete at Essex Invitational

After capturing second and third places in team scoring Friday in events at Mad River Glen, the Champlain Valley Union High alpine ski team will hit the slopes Friday and Saturday in the Essex Invitational.

The boys took second Friday behind winning Bellows Free Academy of St. Albans. Dan Caffrey took third to lead the Redhawks, while Warren Colomb finished sixth and Cody Putre was eighth.

Winner Harwood Union and BFA finished ahead of the CVU girls.

The Redhawks’ Taylor Spillane was a mere one-tenth of a second behind individual winner Lilly Cutts of Burlington High, 1:08.71 to 1:08.72. CVU’s Lucy Halvorson came in seventh.
