CVU alpine ski schedule getting busy

With a holiday break behind them, the Champlain Valley Union High alpine skiers were looking forward to increased competition over the next two weeks, starting this past Tuesday with a slalom event at Smugglers’ Notch Resort.

On Saturday, the Redhawks are slated for a giant slalom at Sugarbush Resort.

In a meet before Christmas at Burke Mountain, the boys and girls teams prevailed over eight competing schools in a two-run slalom.

The girls led with 44 points to 56 for Harwood Union. Taylor Spillane (3rd), Abby Owens (9th) and Lucy Halvorson (10th) led the Hawks.

It was a 25-34 edge over runner-up St. Johnsbury Academy for the boys, who also placed three finishers in the top 10. They were Warren Colomb (3rd), Cody Putre (4th) and Alec Zullo (5th).


Home meet on Tuesday for CVU gymnasts

Following a trip to Milton High on Wednesday night, the Champlain Valley Union High gymnastics team will entertain visiting Middlebury Union High and St. Johnsbury Academy on Tuesday at Green Mountain Gymnastics (240 Pioneer St.) in Williston.

Wednesday’s competition was scheduled for after press deadline.

The Redhawks made it two team victories in three school-to-school competitions Dec. 29 with a 133.95-126 triumph in a home meet against St. Johnsbury Academy.

Ashley Bachand captured the all-around title after grabbing wins on the vault, bars and floor exercise.

Madison Bourdeau was runner-up in all around, taking seconds on the vault, beam and floor exercise.

Third place finishes on the vault and floor exercise went to Amanda Holman.


Wrestlers heading to Otter Valley Invitational

The Champlain Valley Union High wrestling team will head for Brandon and Otter Valley Union High on Saturday morning for the annual Otter Valley Invitation event starting at 9:30 a.m.

Coach Rahn Fleming’s Redhawks will grapple before the home folks Wednesday night, with Middlebury Union High and Milton High coming to CVU.

This past Wednesday, Spaulding High and Harwood Union made the trip to Hinesburg for an event after the Observer’s press deadline.

During the holiday week, the Redhawks came in 14th in the 19-team Hubie Wagner Invitational at Middlebury Union High on Dec. 29.

Sam Fortin was the top CVU performer.
