Season preview: Redhawks bring the heat

Champlain Valley Union High coaches provide a snapshot of their teams for the winter sports season.

Alpine Ski Racing

Coaches: Mike Minnerly, head coach; Lee Morse, Danielle Hampton and Amy McMahon, assistant coaches

Key returning veterans: Boys: Cole Bartlett, Briggs Francis, Caden Frost, Charlie Greenlese, Nate Coffin (currently out with a broken leg). Girls: Erin Zubarik, Nathalie Paquette, Marley Olson

Leading newcomers: Rebecca Provost, Isaac Goldman

Season prospects: We are a young team, particularly on the girls side. We like the effort we are seeing during our dryland training portion and we are confident that our younger, less experienced racers will develop into strong high school ski racers.

Nordic Ski Racing

Coaches:Sarah Strack, head coach; Eli Enman, King Milne, assistant coaches.

Key returning veterans: Boys Team: Baxter Bishop, Jared Leonard, Tyler Marshall, Justin McAuliffe, Harken Spillane; Girls Team: Aidan Corcoran, Annalise Kindstedt, Sophia Gorman, Meara Heininger, Izzy Schmitt

Leading newcomers: Boys: Gus Lunde, Aaron McNally, Stuart Robinson, and Sam Zinner are all joining us from our middle school program; Girls: Lila Carleton, Addy Harris, Sadie Holmes, and Emma Strack are all joining us from our middle school program;plus newcomers Chloe Andrae and Geneva Cote

Season prospects: After last season’s horrible snow conditions, our team goals have altered: we want snow  — and lots of it! We are returning several key state team skiers and have several experienced skiers joining us from our middle-school program. Several skiers had excellent training seasons this summer and fall. We are focusing our efforts on hard work and pushing each other to be the best we can be – and, of course, having fun (hopefully in lots of snow)!

Girls Basketball

Coach: Ute Otley

Key returning veterans: Marlee Gunn, senior; Abby Thut, senior; Katie Usher, senior; Jaime Vachon, senior; Shannon Loiseau, junior; Lindsey Albertelli, junior

Leading newcomers: Too soon to tell

Season prospects: CVU will be a competitive team this season, but is unlikely to continue the dominance of the past four years (95-0, four state championships). After the graduation of eight seniors, including two Gatorade Players of the Year (Laurel Jaunich and Sadie Otley), the team will be rebuilding this winter. CVU’s strength will be its size — four players are 5-foot-10 or taller — and its defense. Marlee Gunn is the lone returning starter from last year and will anchor the backcourt. Abby Thut played significant minutes at the forward last year and will lead the front court. Shannon Loiseau, who emerged late last season, has looked strong through the first week of tryouts. Young guards (sophomores Meghan Gilwee, Harper Mead, Nicole Eaton and freshman Mekkena Boyd) add athleticism and speed to the lineup.

Boys Basketball

Coach: Michael Osborne

Key returning veterans: Seniors Walker Storey (guard/forward 6-foot-4); Josh Bliss (forward/guard 6-foot-2); guards Matt Spear, Colin Monsey and forward George Davis (all are 6-foot-0); Reece Pawlaczyk (forward/guard, 6-foot-2); Brad Reynolds (forward, 6-foot-2); Marc Hoeppner (guard, 5-foot-11). Junior Jack Scotnicki (guard, 6-foot-0) also returns.

Leading newcomers: Junior forwards Spencer Dooley (6-foot-5) and Will Burroughs (6-foot-3), as well as guard/forwards junior Paul Keen (6-foot-0) and sophomore Graham Walker (6-foot-2).

Season prospects:With nine returners back from last year’s 15-7 team, there is strong belief that finish can be improved upon. “The group worked very hard to improve in the off-season and are hungry to contend for the top spot in the Metro Division and Vermont Division I,” said Coach Michael Osborne.

Coaches: Madison Bourdeau, head coach; Ashley Bachand, assistant coach.

Key returning veterans: Julia Higa, Jam Giubardo, Kam Giubardo

Leading newcomers: Tali Giubardo, Lexie Cody, Laurynn Bombardier, Alix St. Hilaire

Season prospects: There are six returning gymnasts to the team and 12 newcomers. This has doubled the size of our team since last year’s competitive season. The new additions will help add depth to CVU gymnastics. The gymnasts are a hardworking and dedicated group together — they are all well-rounded in the four competitive events (vault, bars, beam and floor). We are excited to get our season started!

Girls Ice Hockey

Coach: Paul Wintersteen

Key returning veterans: Anna Burke (MMU), Lauren Hagerty (MMU), Lydia Maitland (CVU), Jackie Ryan (CVU)

Leading newcomers: Too soon to tell

Season prospects: This is the second year of the co-operative arrangement between MMU/CVU in fielding a combined Girls Hockey Team. With the success of last year’s Division 2 State Championship and the return of many of those players, it was decided that the Cougarhawks would move to Division 1. Playing a Division 1 schedule will be challenging and the team will need to quickly learn to play with an increased level of intensity and overall speed. The team’s early season attitude and hard work has been positive and they are looking forward to the regular season starting on Dec.10.

Boys Ice Hockey

Coach: Mike Murray

Key returning veterans: Ty Parker, Richard Hall, Nate Shanks, Charlie Bernicke, Joe Parento, Tyler Brooks, Colin Lach, Collin Vincent, Jennings Lobel

Leading newcomer: Mac Miller

Season prospects: A more veteran club than usual, we should be a good skating club that is hard to play against on a consistent basis. Looking to contend for the title this year.
