The Williston Observer welcomed Jason Starr as its editor in late March.

Starr, a native of Massachusetts, comes to Williston after working since 2007 as a reporter and editor at The Essex Reporter and The Colchester Sun. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado School of Journalism and began his career in the mountain town daily newspapers of Colorado, where he covered sports, environmental news, water rights, land use and education, among other topics.

“I have been greeted by an engaged and welcoming community here in Williston. It’s an ideal place to practice community journalism,” Starr said. “I look forward to building relationships in town, telling stories and chronicling the community’s news and events with a commitment to truth, accuracy and fairness.”

Observer publisher Marianne Apfelbaum is thrilled to have Starr on board. “Jason is everything you want in a weekly newspaper editor. He is experienced, organized, thoughtful and a great proofreader, too. I know I can count on him to do thorough and balanced stories, and he understands our commitment to the residents of Williston and beyond to provide the local news that they need and want every week.”

Starr lives in Essex Junction with his wife Leah. They have a 5-year-old son, Sam, and just this month welcomed a daughter, Naya, to their family. Starr volunteers as secretary of the board of directors at Saxon Hill Preschool, where his son attends.

Starr also owns and operates PaddleSurf Champlain, a stand up paddleboard outfitter that operates in the summer at Burlington’s Oakledge Park. An avid skier, he is also the inventor of Starr Surf Skis, a ski designed to ride ocean waves.
