Annette Marie Spear Durgin

Annette Marie Spear Durgin of Williston, Vermont was welcomed into the arms of the angels on Monday, April 18, 2016.

Annette was brought into the world by her father, William Wayne and Irene Willett Spear on November 28, 1939 in St. Albans, VT. They later moved to Shelburne, VT where she attended Shelburne schools, graduating in 1958. In August of 1958, she married John A. Gay who predeceased her in 1959.

Annette was happiest when she was spending time with her family. She had a way of making every holiday and any occasion special. Her grandchildren brought out her childlike qualities, such as coloring, playing games, snuggling while reading books, singing songs or simply enjoying silly laughter together. She had a unique sense of humor and openly shared her laughter and heart with everyone she met.

She had a welcoming smile that made even a stranger feel like a friend.

She found enjoyment in a variety of areas. Music was one of her favorites, especially through the years of her husband’s playing drums in various bands. She was usually the first one on the dance floor, encouraging others to join in. She was an avid collector of angels of any kind, teddy bears and porcelain dolls were among her favorites.

Through the years she enjoyed boating on Lake Champlain, snowmobiling, bowling, long car rides and picnics on the beach. She loved her sisters’ birthday adventures and there wasn’t a garage sale that she didn’t love!

Annette is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Neil H. Durgin; daughter Pamela Monell of Williston, her children, Sara Monell and fiancé, Jason Voorheez of East Richford and Miranda Monell of Williston; son, Stephen Durgin and his wife, Vickie, their children, Hunter, Hayden and Harlie of Williston. She is also survived by her sisters and their husbands, Philip and Ethel Brousseau of Milton, VT and Stephen and Colleen Lavalette of Arizona; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, David and Ann Blake of Maine, sisters-in-law Barbara Spear, Joyce Spear, Sandra Hatin, Becky Ryea and brother-in-law Carl Beane and many cherished nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Winston, Richard, William, Robert, Thomas and James. She was also predeceased by sisters Eleanor Cusson, Patricia Beane and sisters-in-law Beverlee Spear, Bettye Spear and brothers-in-law Albert Cusson, Richard Durgin and Clayton Durgin.

Annette’s family would like to thank the incredible staff (a special thanks to Julia) at Green Mountain Nursing Home for their kindness, compassion and humor which helped to make the final days of her journey a more gentle one.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to: Franklin County Animal Rescue, 30 Sunset Meadow, St. Albans, VT 05478.

Annette liked to keep notes of quotes that touched her in some way. On the day of her passing, this was found in her notebook, written several years prior: “We never die, because we live in the hearts of everyone who loved us.” And she will, indeed, remain in the hearts of many.
