When the month of March rolls in, the Champlain Valley Union High Nordic ski teams under coach Sarah Strack are on the march.
The Redhawk boys packed up their third straight Division 1 state title Tuesday in Ripton while the defending champion girls took second behind winning Mount Mansfield Union High.
The individual crowns were all CVU red and white as Charlie Maitland strolled to victory in Tuesday’s 5-k classic and Rachel Slimovitch was victorious on the girls’ side.
For Maitland, it was a sweep of the events as he had captured the freestyle race last Thursday. Slimovitch was celebrating her first major race triumph.
Joining Maitland at the head of the boys’ pack were eighth place Ben Carnahan, 10th finisher Harken Spillane and Baxter Bishop in 11th.
Redhawks’ Aidan Corcoran was 10th in the girls’ race.
Maitland, speaking to WCAX-TV reporters about CVU’s fourth boys’ crown in five years, said, “Every year we lose some people, but we are able to keep coming back.”
Alpine skiers finish sixth
Vermont high school Alpine Ski Championships were wrapped up at Okemo Mountain Resort Tuesday with the Champlain Valley Union High boys and girls teams each finishing in sixth place in the combined giant slalom and slalom standings.
The overall titles for both boys and girls went to Woodstock Union High.
In the boys’ giant slalom, CVU’s Caden Frost took fifth place and Nate Coffin was ninth.
Emma Putre topped the CVU girls with a seventh in the giant slalom.
