The Champlain Valley Union High boys hockey team, 2-2-1 in its last five outings, will meet the Mount Mansfield Union High Cougars at 8 p.m. on Saturday night at the Essex rink.
This follows an important test that took place at Cairns 1 Arena after press deadline on Wednesday against South Burlington High. The Rebels were 7-3-1 coming into the contest. Overall, the Redhawks were 6-3-1, having edged the Rebels 4-3 earlier in the season.
In their last outing Saturday night, against 8-3-1 Spaulding High of Barre, the Redhawks seriously outgunned the Crimson Tide. But when the time expired, CVU found itself on the losing end of a 2-1 verdict, despite a blooming 35-13 advantage in shots on goal.
After a nifty start in which Brady DeHayes popped home a goal just over 90 seconds into the game — assist to Sam Spencer — the Redhawks found the scoring portal suddenly closed. Hardworking Spaulding net minder Chris Pelkey authored some 34 stops, blanking CVU the rest of the way.
The 1-0 lead stood until the final six minutes of the third and final period, when the Tide scored twice and nailed down the victory.
It was the first meeting of the season between the two teams, who collide again Feb. 14 in Barre.
