Marshall Avenue remains closed for the foreseeable future after a sinkhole emerged last Friday over the brook that makes up the Williston-South Burlington town line.

Williston Assistant Public Works Director Lisa Schaeffler said the town is working with South Burlington and the Vermont Agency of Transportation to install a temporary bridge over the sinkhole. She estimates the bridge will be installed by mid-May.

There is no official detour set up, but traffic is self-diverting through Route 2 and other local roads.

“There are a lot of different ways to get around it,” Schaeffler said.

The problem emerged during high water last Friday when the culvert under the road failed. Crews have not been able to assess the damage because heavy spring runoff continues.

“Springtime is the worst time to inspect (a culvert),” Schaeffler said Tuesday, adding that the sinkhole continues to get larger.
