Girls on the Run Vermont celebrates the culmination of its 2018 spring season with its annual Northern Vermont 5K on Saturday at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction. The event, which starts at 10 a.m., is a celebration of the Williston nonprofit’s 10-week after school empowerment program for local girls in grades 3-8.

The public is welcome and encouraged to support the girls on the course or as spectators. Volunteers are also still needed to help make the day a success.

From face painting/hair spraying and handing out beads, to equipment setup and breakdown, there are many opportunities to get involved. Individuals, families and groups can sign up to volunteer at

“This day is more than just a 5k,” said Girls on the Run Executive Director Nancy Heydinger. “It’s a celebration of confidence, connection, uniqueness and all of the goals the girls have accomplished in our program over the past few months … The emotions of this day are indescribable and can only truly be felt when experienced first-hand.”

Proceeds from the event benefit the Girls on the Run Every Girl Fund, which ensures that every girl in Vermont has an opportunity to participate in the program.

Girls on the Run participants and coaches are pre-registered for the event. Community members looking to participate can register at through Thursday. Day-of registration is also available at the Expo.
