Four wins for girls hockey; CVU week in sports

Champlain Valley-Mount Mansfield 6, Northfield 2

The Champlain Valley-Mount Mansfield co-op girls hockey team made it four wins in their last six games with a victory over Northfield.

Lydia Maitland found the back of the net twice and added an assist for the CougarHawks (4-8), while Jackie Ryan also added two goals and an assist. Emily Zambrano chipped in with a goal and Joanna Wright made 14 saves.

Earlier in the week, the CVU-MMU co-op got the offense rolling with a 8-0 win over host Burr and Burton.

Anna Burke scored twice, while Nicole Wright, Maitland, Kiley McClure, Audrey Scott, Megan Hawley and Lauren Hanley each scored a goal. Wright and Fiona Dulude combined for five saves.


Essex 2, Champlain Valley 1

Ryan Young tallied with just over two minutes remaining in regulation to lift Essex to the win over Champlain Valley.

Nick McGovern earned the assist on the play for the Hornets (7-5), while Jonah Janaro also tallied. Sam Foster stopped 24 shots to earn the win.

Joe Parento scored for the Redhawks (6-4-2), who had a 1-0 lead in the second period, and Charlie Bernicke and Charlie Averill each had an assist. Ty Parker made 35 saves.

The Redhawks also gave up a late goal in a 4-3 loss to Woodstock on Wednesday night. The Wasps scored three goals in the third period to top visiting CVU.

Collin Vincent had a goal and an assist, while Richard Hall and Jake Schaefer each tallied once for the Redhawks. Jake Kindestin made 12 saves,


Champlain Valley 62, Colchester 44

Colin Monsey scored a game-high 22 points for the Champlain Valley boys basketball team as the Redhawks topped Colchester on Saturday.

Walker Storey added 14 points for CVU (12-1), while Matt Spear chipped in with 10 points. Monsey tallied 14 of his 22 points in the second quarter as the Redhawks won their ninth game in a row.

Thomas Meadows led the Lakers (6-6) with 16 points.

Monsey also knocked down 19 points for the Redhawks on Friday night as they downed North Country, 82-43. Storey (14 points), Jack Scotnicki (10 points) and George Davis (nine points) all tallied for CVU.


Champlain Valley 75, Spaulding 26

Shannon Loiseau netted a double-double for the Champlain Valley girls basketball team in a rout of Spaulding.

Loiseau had 12 points and 14 rebounds to pace the Redhawks (9-2), while Abby Thut led all scorers with 15 points. Marlee Gunn and Lindsey Albertelli each chipped in 12 points.

Whitney Renaud scored seven points for the Crimson Tide (0-11).

On Thursday night, CVU topped St. Johnsbury, 54-47, to hand the Hilltoppers their first loss of the season behind strong offensive performance from Gunn and Thut.

Thut had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Redhawks, while Gunn added 13 points. Loiseau had nine points, seven rebounds and three blocks.
