With a 7-0 mark to close out the first half of the season, the defending Division 1 champion Champlain Valley Union High field hockey team opened the second half Saturday. In a home game on Spirit Day, the Redhawks notched a 5-0 victory over visiting Burlington High.

Following a home contest Wednesday against Essex High, coach Kate McDonald’s Redhawks will host Colchester High on Friday before traveling to Mount Mansfield Union High on Tuesday.

Essex gave CVU all it could handle Sept. 4 at the Hornets’ field before the Redhawks triumphed, 2-1 in overtime.

In dealing with the Burlington High Seahorses by a 5-0 score for the second time this season, CVU got a pair of goals from KK Logan. The tallies boosted her season total to eight.

Emmaleigh Loyer popped home a goal and helped on two others. The senior has nine scores and seven assists.

Also adding goals on Saturday were Molly Burke, her first, and Kelcey Lamphere, her third.

The goaltending chores were shared by Elizabeth Goddette and Sami Kassel, who combined for three stops.

Last Thursday, CVU took care of a Route 116 neighborly interaction with a 4-1 victory at Mount Abraham Union in Bristol.

Loyer fired in a pair of scores while Kelsey Jensen accounted for one goal plus two assists. Louise Gibbs knocked home a tally and Kathryn Powell logged two assists.

Goddette had four saves in the CVU cage.
