School opening may be a couple of weeks away, but team tryouts and practice sessions for the new 2015 fall season began Monday with football front and center.

New head coach Mike Williams (Div. 3 title at Bellows Free Academy of Fairfax last year) greeted more than 80 hopefuls. Williams has 16 days before the Redhawks face their opener at Rutland High.

The CVU fields will be full of folks Thursday when the other four programs hold their first tryouts and grueling fitness tests.

Cross country, boys and girls soccer and field hockey all start Thursday. The earliest opening competition is for Scott Bliss’ cross country defending state girls champs, who have the informal CVU Relays slated for Aug. 29.
