The top-seeded Champlain Valley Union High tennis teams return to action this week, with all racquets aimed at state Division 1 team championships.
Cassie Smith hits a shot against Essex High’s Donna Gordon during a match in April. The Champlain Valley Union High star captured her second straight Vermont girls singles title on Saturday.
This after Cassie Smith scored her second straight Vermont girls singles crown Saturday, while David Hilderbrand was runner-up in pursuit of the boys title.
The boys team, 11-1 for the season, will be on its home courts at Davis Park in Shelburne at 3 p.m. Thursday to meet eighth-seeded Hartford High, the 4-3 winner of Monday’s match-up against ninth-seeded Essex High.
CVU’s unbeaten (12-0) girls will take to the Shelburne courts at 3 p.m. Friday against 8th-seeded South Burlington High (8-6), which knocked off ninth-seeded Middlebury Union (5-8) on Tuesday, 6-1.
In rolling to her second straight individual championship Saturday at Topnotch Resort in Stowe, Smith scored 6-2 and 6-1 triumphs over Rice Memorial High’s Maddy Hartley in the afternoon’s match for all the marbles.
Earlier, Smith had scored 6-2 and 6-4 victories over Rice’s Holly Thayer in the semifinals.
Hilderbrand earned his way into the finals by scoring 6-4 and 6-2 wins against Stowe High’s Alex Hunter in the semis. But Stowe High junior Coleman Gay, the defending titleholder, whipped Hilderbrand in the championship round, 6-2 and 6-2.
Making his way to the semis with Hilderbrand was teammate Marc Vecchio, who became another victim of Gay’s, 6-0 and 6-1.
The Stowe boys, who handed CVU its only team loss, will not be a factor for the Redhawks in the upcoming tournament. The Raiders are in the Division 2 event.
