Champlain Valley Union volleyball players joined senior Tori Bergstein on Sept. 17 after they raised $9,500 during a spin-a-thon at The Edge in Essex to benefit celiac disease research.

Bergstein, whose sister has celiac disease, organized the “Spin for Celiac” as part of her grad challenge at CVU.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes gluten intolerance.

“My sister, Rachel, was diagnosed with celiac disease when she was 5 and has lived with the disease for nine years now,” Bergstein said. “I decided to combine my love for my sister with my family’s appreciation for the many local Vermont companies that make fantastic gluten-free products, and my desire to follow a career in medicine.”

The money raised will be donated to the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University.
