The Champlain Valley Union-Mount Mansfield Union girls hockey team scored a state championship last week.

Last Wednesday marked a historic win for Champlain Valley Union High girls hockey players—their first state title.

Last fall, the fate of girl’s hockey at Champlain Valley Union High was unknown. Recognizing he had six girls committed to the game, CVU Athletic Director Dan Shepardson connected with his counterpart at Mount Mansfield Union High, David Marlow, and a cooperative partnership was formed. With the addition of a lone player from Mount Abraham, the players from three different schools came together to form one girls hockey team.

Representing CVU were Jackie Ryan, Katie Peck, Bailee Pudvar, Lauren Hanley, Lydia Maitland and Amelia Chicoine.

“I thought it was going to be very different and we wouldn’t mix well, but it was the opposite of that,” Hanley said. “I am friends with everyone on the team.”

That positive energy and respect for each other resulted in the MMU Cougar Hawks being the second-ranked team headed into the playoffs.

“I never saw any signs where the group wasn’t buying into the team-first mentality,” said Head Coach Paul Wintersteen. It was that unity that resulted in winning the Division 2 Girls Hockey Championship at UVM’s Gutterson Field House against Montpelier’s U-32. The win marks the first girls hockey championship for the schools.
