The Champlain Valley Union High wrestling team will turn its attention to next weekend’s state championships after bringing home a big win.
The Redhawks scored the number one spot in the Northern Vermont Athletic Conferences Divisions Championship, or NVAC, held at St. Johnsbury Academy on Saturday.
CVU entered the tournament with a 14-1 conference record and collected three more to earn the team title for the second time in three seasons. A 63-13 victory over Vergennes in the first round advanced the Redhawks into the semi-finals, where they defeated Mount Abraham 59-21.
In a tight battle that came down to the last match, the tournament champions were decided when freshman Wyatt Sanderson came back from a point deficit and pinned his tough opponent with less than a minute to go in the match, securing CVU’s victory 42-30.
“We are proud of our guys and although other teams may work just as hard, it’s the team unity that separated us in this tournament,” said Coach Gunnar Olson.
The Redhawks are also coming off a Feb. 10 win against Vergennes, Randolph and Fair Haven.
The JV state championship is set for Feb. 20, with the varsity championship following on Feb. 26.
CVU will be entering all 14-weight classes in the championship, held this year at Mill River Union High School.
“We’re going to have a strong showing and are more prepared than ever,” Olson said.
