They gave up a goal Tuesday (a very rare occurrence) but a 3-1 victory at Colchester High sends the defending Division 1 champion Champlain Valley Union High boys soccer team into its season’s first contest against strong Essex High on Saturday with an undefeated 7-0-1 mark.
Essex, on the other hand, suffered its first loss of the season Tuesday, a 1-0 blanking under the lights at Burlington High. The 7-1-1 Seahorses and CVU played to a scoreless tie at Burlington in late September.
Saturday’s contest, at Essex, has been moved to a 3 p.m. start due to school SATs.
One CVU mark did fall Tuesday. The Lakers struck very early in the game for the first goal of the season allowed by the stingy Redhawks’ defense. In fact, the last time a soccer ball found its way into the CVU net was Oct. 10, 2009 during a 3-1 win over, yes, Essex.
After the Lakers’ score by Dustan Whitcomb in the first two minutes Tuesday, CVU regrouped and shut down Colchester the rest of the game, goalkeeper Jeff Wettstein coming up with five saves.
The CVU offense got on the board just prior to intermission on a Henry Sengle penalty kick.
Tied 1-1 into the second half, the Redhawks got goals from Sam Rascka and Zack Blanchard to finally put away the pesky 6-3 Lakers.
CVU had eight shots on the Colchester net.
