Police receive grant for bulletproof vests

Williston is one of 21 towns to receive federal grants to purchase bulletproof vests for police officers, Sen. Patrick Leahy announced on Oct. 1.

“At a time when towns have had to tighten their belts and make tough decisions about their budgets, these grants are even more important for communities in Vermont,” Leahy said in a press release.

Williston will receive nearly $2,400 for the vests. Vermont State Police also received funds, more than $6,300.

Leahy also announced a $1 million grant for the Vermont Drug Task Force, a statewide initiative aimed at substance abuse prevention and treatment and anti-drug crime investigation.

Old Stage Road sidewalk approved

The Agency of Natural Resources has signed off on the construction of a sidewalk on Old Stage Road.

The sidewalk would go between Wildflower Circle and Adams Apple Orchard & Farm Market, which would complete the rec loop path around Williston Village. The stretch is a popular spot for bikers and joggers, but does not have a shoulder on either side of the road.

The town of Williston had requested a conditional use determination from the agency to see if the 5-foot sidewalk and 12-inch waterline would impact a nearby wetland.

The decision states that the Agency of Natural Resources did not foresee any “undue, adverse effects to the protected function of the significant wetland off Old Stage Road.”

Residents can appeal the Oct. 5 decision within 30 days by contacting the clerk of the Environmental Court and paying a $225 fee.

Williston resident joins Marines

Champlain Valley Union High School student Khanh V. Nguyen recently enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Nguyen enlisted under the Delayed Entry Program, which gives recruits up to a year to finish prior commitments, including high school. Nguyen will finish his senior year at CVU.

The program helps recruits “ease into the transition from civilian to military life,” according to a Navy press release.
