Winning ways restored for CVU girls hoops team

With a two-game losing streak now in its rearview mirror, the 9-5 Champlain Valley Union High girls basketball team will seek a second straight win Thursday night in Newport against North Country Union High.

The Redhawks got past the Falcons 48-36 at CVU’s Bremner Gymnasium in early January.

Coach Jeff Evans’ hoopsters turned back visiting Vergennes Union High 40-28 Monday night despite continued cool shooting and a case of turnoveritis.

A gritty defensive effort earned a 25-6 halftime advantage and the outcome was apparent after that even though the 3-10 Commodores bounced back with a 22-15 edge in the second half.

Senior forward Shae Hulburt turned in a whopper of a double-double-plus performance with 14 points and 10 rebounds to go with six blocked shots and three steals.

Hulbert’s two free throws — she was 8-for-12 at the line — with 1:39 left in the game and late layup (assist to Abbie Giles) closed out matters after Vergennes had closed to within 36-28. The tightening score had created some nervousness on the CVU bench with two minutes to go.

The Redhawks shot a frosty 25 percent (13-for-51) from the floor and turned the ball over 28 times in the baggy contest. The Commodores shot just 24 percent for the game after hitting just one of 22 shots in the first half. They had 31 turnovers.

Senior forward Allison Provost (16 points) unleashed a 14-point second half to fire up Vergennes. She swished 6-of-8 shots including a trey.

Evans gave extensive playing time to the entire 13-person roster with 10 getting on the scoring charts and nine hauling in rebounds. Caroline Limanek and Amanda Kinneston each produced six points while Elana Bayer-Pacht contributed five rebounds and four steals.

Last Thursday, the Redhawks bowed 43-41 to 7-4 Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans as shooting woes continued to hamper the Hawks.

Kinneston paced the CVU scorers with eight points.

Chilly from the floor, CVU also endured Klondike shooting from the charity stripe; the Red and White nailed just nine of 21 tries.
