Williston has been named the “best place to raise kids in Vermont” by Bloomberg Businessweek, a New York City-based weekly print magazine and website published by Bloomberg L.P.

The article, posted online on Dec. 18 by contributor Daniel D’Addario, picks the most child-friendly municipality in each of the 50 states. The Williston blurb mentions the Brick Church Music Series, the Allen Brook Nature Trail and the town’s proximity to Burlington and the University of Vermont.

According to a companion piece written by D’Addario, more than 3,200 municipalities were evaluated nationwide with populations between 5,000 and 50,000—excluding places where the median family income exceeds $115,866. Using data from, the FBI, the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the rankings included considerations of housing costs, share of households with children, unemployment figures and diversity. “Public school performance and safety were weighed most heavily,” the article notes.

Williston Town Manager Rick McGuire, who reposted a link to the article on the town website, suggested that the entire town has earned the honor.

“It’s good news, and I think it’s a reflection of the hard work everyone has put into the community over the years, including the volunteers,” McGuire said.

I take frequent walks in my neighborhood and surrounding sidewalks/roads on Industrial Avenue and Rt 2-A and occasionally see what appears to be a dog-poop bag, nicely tied, but simply left there in the road or on the sidewalk. I would like to remind dog-walkers that this is not appropriate. Please carry it off.

Thank you for meeting your legal responsibilities.
