Students collect cash for Haiti (2/4/10)

Feb. 4, 2010

In less than two weeks, students in the Williston School District raised more than $1,600 for earthquake victims in Haiti.

Lower house students at Allen Brook School and World Language students at Williston Central School made blue and red ribbons to sell as pins. Each pin cost $1, with all money being donated to various aid organizations.

Williston Central held a school-wide fund-raiser on Jan. 26, raising $1,067, according to school receptionist Carmen Portelli. All money went toward the Save the Children Organization.

At Allen Brook, the fund-raiser earned more than $600, according to Calliope House teacher Kathy Dodge. Dodge said the ribbons proved so successful that students will continue selling them until February vacation.

Allen Brook is a sister school with Ecole Baptiste de Juchereau in Haiti. The school was unaffected by the earthquake, but its town is expected to house many refugees from areas hit by the quake.
