Kyala Schenck, a senior at Champlain Valley Union High School, won the best-in-show prize in a contest that challenged students to create useful or artful objects out of trash.
Schenck was one of dozens of students who participated in the Chittenden Solid Waste District’s annual Creative ReUse Showcase. Her entry, “Stripped Elegance,” was a dress made from photographic test strips and discarded negatives.
Another CVU student’s creation was also recognized by judges. Dallas Dodd won in the strongest statement category for a figure sculpted out of trash bags, can pop-tops and other waste.
Contest entries are now on display at Frog Hollow Gallery, 85 Church St. in Burlington. Gallery visitors can vote on their favorite for the People’s Choice Award, with the winner announced during the exhibit’s closing ceremony on Feb. 17. The ceremony runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
