CVU HOOP LADS HOME TO REBELS SATURDAY

Coach Michael Osborne and his Champlain Valley Union High boys basketball team will be seeking a second straight triumph Saturday at 12:30 p.m., when it entertains the South Burlington High Rebels.

The two teams bring 2-3 records to the fracas.

The Redhawks are coming off Monday night’s trip to Swanton, where they handed the 0-5 Missisquoi Valley Union High Thunderbirds a 44-23 licking.

CVU had offensive balance led by guard Zach Evans, plus big men Lucas Aube and Brandon O’Connell with nine points apiece.

Last Friday, the Redhawks went to Burlington High where the 5-0 Seahorses scored a 54-36 win, thanks in large part to Asko Mostarlx, who clicked for 29 points and 13 rebounds.

Ryan Schneiderman fired in 11 counters for CVU.

HOME GAME SATURDAY FOR GIRLS HOCKEY TEAM

The 4-2 Champlain Valley Union-South Burlington High girls hockey team will skate before the home folks Saturday for the first time since Dec. 11, when it whipped Spaulding High of Barre 7-3.

North Country Union will provide the competition Saturday with opening faceoff set for 6:15 p.m.

The Reb-Hawks hit the road again Wednesday with a trip to Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans.

Their last 2013 game was a 5-1 victory at Stowe High Dec. 23.

A scheduled contest at Missisquoi Valley Union Dec. 21 was postponed until Jan. 27.

WEDNESDAY MEET FOR CVU GYMNASTS

The Champlain Valley Union High gymnastics team will make its new year’s debut Wedneday at 6 p.m. at Randolph Union High.

Coach Bob Abbott’s Redhawks final 2013 action took place last Dec. 27, a 122.9 to 104.6 victory over visiting Middlebury Union at Green Mountain Gymnastics.

CVU freshman Julia Higa won the all-around and vault while veteran senior Sarah Kinsley was top performer on the bars and in floor exercise.

Junior Taylor Filardi won the beam competition.

CVU WRESTLERS AT TOURNAMENT SATURDAY

After notching place finishes in two prestigious early season tournaments, coach Gunnar Olson’s Champlain Valley Union High wrestling team heads for the annual Otter Valley Union High Tournament Saturday.

Then on Wednesday, the Redhawks will be at Colchester High along with teams from Enosburg High and Middlebury Union.

Three wrestlers bagged victories for CVU in last weekend’s Hubie Wagner Tournament at Middlebury with Alex Legg (132-pound class) and Grant Poston (170) repeating their earlier wins at the 17-team St. Johnsbury Early Bird event.

Kienan Kittridge captured the Wagner 195-pound class. He had a runner-up finish at St. Johnsbury.
