CVU gymnasts at home on Wednesday

In the wake of a 2009-opening victory on Saturday at Middlebury Union High, the Champlain Valley Union High gymnastics team will return to its Green Mountain Gymnastics home in Williston on Wednesday for a session with Milton High, starting at 7 p.m.

Ashley Bachand led the Redhawks to their 124-112.3 triumph at Middlebury with victories on the vault, bars, beam and floor exercise.

Kiley Bourdeau came in second on the vault and beam, while Stephanie Lockenberg took first on the beam and Kristen Darby placed third to give CVU a sweep of the event.

The Redhawks also captured the first three places on the bars, with Bethany Karstens (2nd) and Sidney Hilker (3rd) following Bachand.

Tough foes on horizon for CVU boys hockey

With a pair of victories and a tie in their last three games, the Champlain Valley Union High boys hockey team took on Colchester High Wednesday night.

Up next are home matches at Cairns 1 Arena against 7-3-1 Spaulding High at 8 p.m. on Saturday and against tough South Burlington High next Wednesday.

The Redhawks, 6-2-1 going into the Colchester game, nipped South Burlington 4-3 in mid-December.

Coach Doug Hopper’s charges were coming off a 6-0 thumping of Rice Memorial High last Saturday. Kyle Logan racked up four scores to lead the way while Robbie Dobrowski and back liner Eric Robinson netted singletons.

Mark Albertson and Chris McGinnis shared the goaltending chores, combining for 25 stops in the shutout.

The Redhawks’ tie came Dec. 30, when they deadlocked at 3 in St. Albans against Bellows Free Academy. Brady DeHayes knocked in two goals and Sam Parent one for CVU, while Albertson kicked out 33 BFA shots during a busy night between the pipes.
