CASTANO EARNS SPOT ON SELECT SOCCER TEAM

Joseph Castano of Williston has been selected to the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Region I 1996 boys pool team.

According to a news release from the Vermont Soccer Association, which is based in Williston, Castano is among the top players in its ODP program.

The ODP program identifies a pool of players in each age group from which a national team would be selected for international competition, such as the Olympics. The release states that the US Youth Soccer ODP “provides high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develops a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.”

TWO FROM IRELAND LEGION TEAM EARN TOURNEY HONORS

An outfielder and a pitcher-first baseman from the S.D. Ireland American Legion baseball team made the all-tournament squad following the recent state tournament in Castleton.

A first team outfield slot went to Larry Halvorson, whose hot bat produced nearly 10 hits during the four-day event.

Sean Rugg, who pitched, played first and swung a steady bat, was named to a utility position on the team.

Ryan Crowley was the tournament’s most valuable player. Crowley is a catcher for the champion Colchester Cannons.

The Irelands went 2-2 in the tournament, finishing in third place.
