After seeing their season-opening, six-game victory streak snapped by two holiday week road losses, the Champlain Valley Union High boys basketball team returns to Bremner Gymnasium Thursday night in hopes of getting back on the triumph trail.

The Redhawks tip off against visiting St. Johnsbury Academy (2-6) at 6:30 p.m.

A strong Essex High quintet, 7-1 and fresh from a home win over previously undefeated Burlington High on Monday, will roll into the Hinesburg house of hoops for a 12:30 p.m. game on Saturday.

The Redhawks return to the road Tuesday for the short jaunt to South Burlington High and a 7 p.m. meeting with the 6-2 Rebels.

After a pre-Christmas, come-from-behind, 62-53 thumbs-upper at home over Bellows Free Academy of St. Albans, the Redhawks gave the then unbeaten Burlington High Seahorses some heartburn before bowing 56-50 last Wednesday in the Queen City.

Mike Clayton, who had a big night off the bench against BFA (14 points, 7 rebounds), popped 14 points against BHS to lead CVU. Teammates Jake Donnelly and Will Hurd each scored 11. The Redhawks led 27-26 at halftime.

Monday’s trip to Barre found a well-balanced Spaulding High team that put four players in double figures en route to a 62-57 win over the Hawks.

Chris Nigh broke out with 16 points for CVU. Hurd chipped in with 15 and Robert Russ added 12.

The victory boosted the Crimson Tide to 5-3.
