After a 2-1 double overtime win at rainy Essex High School last Saturday, the Champlain Valley Union High School team will face North Country at home on Oct. 13. On Wednesday afternoon, after the Observer’s press time, the Redhawks played Burlington High School on their home field. The last game against the Seahorses finished in a 1-1 tie.
Saturday’s game—played in Essex because the CVU home field was unplayable—was a tight contest between the now 8-1-1 Redhawks and the Hornets.
Jeremy Richard shot CVU’s first goal after 15 minutes, on an assist from Joe Castano. The Hornet’s lone goal came from Rijad Mezetovic nearly 15 minutes later on an unassisted shot. The score stayed at 1-1 until the 98-minute mark. During the second 10-minute sudden death overtime session—just two minutes before the game would have ended in a tie—Shane Haley found the back of the net, assisted by Castano.
CVU keeper Brandon O’Connell had five saves; Hornets goalie Daniel Palker had 10.
“I was very pleased with our effort and quality of play,” Coach TJ Mead wrote in an email to the Observer. “I was proud of my boys and specifically in their ability to play Essex at Essex for a second time this season.”
