Milton educator Angela Filion was hired last week to take over as principal of Allen Brook School in Williston starting in July.

She will replace John Terko, who plans to retire at the end of the school year, after 18 years as principal of the kindergarten-through-second-grade school.

Filion is currently the assistant principal at Milton Elementary School, working with students in kindergarten through fifth grade. She graduated from Milton High School, earned degrees at Johnson State College and Southern New Hampshire University and has been an elementary school educator in Milton for the past 17 years.

“I am excited to be part of a new community of learners,” she said in an interview Tuesday.

Before advancing to administration, Filion taught kindergarten, first and second grades. She counts teaching the fundamentals of reading as one of her strengths.

“I like the curiosity and enthusiasm of that age,” she said.

Her philosophy as an administrator has been to find ways to help each child learn.

“All students can learn. It’s our job to find the best possible way to help them grow. I live by that. With good teams and collaboration, we can help all kids get where they need to be,” she said.

Amanda Marvin, one of Williston’s representatives on the Champlain Valley School Board, served on the hiring committee that recommended Filion for the job.

“I’m impressed with Angela’s demonstrated ability to learn and grow. I look forward to seeing how (she) helps the Allen Brook community continue to learn and grow,” Marvin said in a school district press release.

Two Allen Brook teachers also served on the committee, Kim Rodliffe and Laura Dyer. They released a joint statement.

“We are very excited to welcome Angela to the Allen Brook School community. We look forward to incorporating her broad knowledge of early literacy to our practice. Her experience both in the classroom and as an administrator will make her a great fit for our school, and her enthusiasm and passion for the primary grades will be an asset for us all,” they said.

Filion will work under Williston Schools Principal Greg Marino as well as Champlain Valley School District Superintendent Elaine Pinckney.

“I am delighted to welcome Angela to the Williston schools, to Allen Brook School specifically and to the leadership team of the Champlain Valley School District,” Pinckney said.
