When students returned to Champlain Valley Union High School this week, several new staff members were there to greet them.
Jessica Barnum is a part-time reading specialist and yoga instructor this year. Barnum has taught middle school language arts at schools in Vermont and Connecticut for the past 15 years. She has been a yoga instructor for the last five years and “specializes in asthma wellness and teen yoga classes,” she wrote in an e-mail to the Observer.
Barnum replaces longtime teacher Kristin Johnson, who retired after 26 years at CVU.
Kari Hoose is teaching social studies part time. She is replacing Vince Crockenberg, who had been at the school since 2002.
Most recently, Hoose taught social studies and Spanish at Missisquoi Valley Union High School. Before that, she lived in South America and Mexico and taught social studies in Mexico City.
“The students I’ve met so far are incredible people and I’m excited to meet and get to know the students in my classes,” Hoose wrote in an e-mail to the Observer.
Emily McLean is a part-time art teacher, replacing Judith Klima. She has been teaching for eight years, most recently at Spaulding High School in Barre. McLean, a Shelburne resident, said she is looking forward to working closer to home.
Susan Krasnow is a new part-time special educator. Krasnow has been a special educator for more than 35 years, and worked as a long-term substitute at CVU for part of last year.
“I’m looking forward to being able to assist the special education team and providing the supports that students need to be able to succeed here at CVU,” Krasnow said.
Megan Anderson is a new school nurse, taking over for Caroline Slater.
Tucker Cruikshank, the new library assistant, is a former technical coordinator for Rochester School.
“I’m very excited to be here,” he wrote in an e-mail. “I’m looking forward to getting to know all the great staff here at CVU.”
Other new staff members include Michael Dumont, a media specialist and Nick Simon, a paraprofessional. Tim Trevithick is also joining the staff as Chittenden South Supervisory Union’s student assistance program worker at CVU. Mary Mums will also be at the school as a social worker contracted through Howard Mental Health.
