Mitchell helps boys lax add wins

Since recovering from a 0-4 start to the season, the Champlain Valley Union High boys lacrosse team has placed itself in the middle of postseason conversations while lifting its overall record to 8-6.

A huge victory came Friday, a 13-9 triumph over highly regarded 11-3 Middlebury on the road. Senior Elliott Mitchell, a lean, goal-getting machine, fired five scores in leading the CVU assault.

Mitchell continued his offensive leadership Tuesday at the Redhawks nest by uncorking two first period goals and three in the first half of a 15-6 triumph over visiting Colchester High.

With CVU’s offense slowed by a tricky Laker zone defense, Mitchell unleashed two long rocket shots for the game’s first two scores. Colchester closed within 2-1 by the end of the initial quarter, but Owen McCuin scored for CVU early in the second reel and Mitchell hit a 20-footer midway through the period to put the Redhawks up 4-1 en route to a 7-2 halftime advantage.

McCuin, Griffin DiParlo and Charlie Bernicke all joined Mitchell with three-goal hat tricks with Bernicke adding a trio of assists. Mitchell had two helpers.

At Middlebury, Bernicke collected three goals and DiParlo two while netminder Chris Gronlund stopped nine Tiger shots.

“That was a good win,” said veteran CVU assistant coach Nick Mead of the triumph over Middlebury. “We played four good quarters.”

CVU closes the regular campaign Friday with a home test against 3-11 Mount Mansfield Union. Game time is 4 p.m.
