Mr. and Mrs. James A. McSweeney of Merrimack, N.H. celebrated their 50th anniversary this summer.
Mr. McSweeney and the former Evelyn Isham of Williston were married on June 30, 1962 at Our Lady of the Lake Church in St. Albans Bay.
Mr. and Mrs. McSweeney have five children: Jay McSweeney of Laurel, Md.; Kevin J. McSweeney of Wilmot, N.H.; Mark R. McSweeney of Concord, N.H.; Karen M. Palmer of Concord, N.H.; and Steven P. McSweeney of Bow, N.H.
The couple also has 12 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. McSweeney began their celebration on their anniversary day with a renewal of vows at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Merrimack, which was followed by an evening dinner with their family. The next day, they continued the celebration with a brunch at the Common Man in Concord, followed by a day-long gathering hosted by their children.
The McSweeneys plan to continue their traveling this fall, including trips to Cape Cod, Mass., Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Florida.
James McSweeney graduated from St. Michael’s College. He and his wife owned and operated the Edgewater Pavilion in St. Albans Bay. After that, he served more than 35 years as a city and town manager in Vermont and New Hampshire and is now retired. Mr. McSweeney served six years in the Vermont National Guard. He was active as a youth baseball coach in Merrimack.
Evie McSweeney, one of 13 children, graduated from Fanny Allen Memorial School of Nursing in Colchester. She left the nursing profession to raise their five children. She served for several years as a board member of the Visiting Nurse Association in Vermont and New Hampshire. She also was an active volunteer with the Cub Scouts.
