With the game tied at 14 and time ticking down, Champlain Valley High School running back Andrew Tieso punched the ball into the endzone to lift the Redhawks football team to its first win of the season.

Tieso’s 1-yard touchdown run, which came with 29 seconds remaining, gave CVU (1-1) a 22-14 win over visiting Rutland on Saturday afternoon in Hinesburg.

Zaq Ubaitel (2-yard run) and Shane Boehmeke (20-yard run) also took the ball in for touchdowns for the Redhawks, while Graham Walker connected with Jack ZuWallack for a 2-point conversion to give CVU a 14-0 lead.

Rutland, paced by two touchdown runs from quarterback Jared Miglorie, came back to tie it 14-14, but the Redhawks came up with a game-winning drive to seal the win.

Champlain Valley will face Essex on Friday at 7 p.m.

FIELD HOCKEY

South Burlington 4, Champlain Valley 3: Champlain Valley field hockey mounted a comeback but ultimately fell to visiting South Burlington, 4-3, on Monday afternoon in Hinesburg.

The early-season slugfest saw the Wolves (3-0) open up a 3-0 lead and hold off the Redhawks to earn the win.

Lydia Maitland, Bella Rieley and Caroline Reynolds each had a goal for CVU, which fell to 2-1.

Grace Hoehl had two goals and two assists to pace South Burlington.

Last Thursday, the Redhawks kept up their offensive prowess, scoring eight goals in an 8-2 win over Middlebury.

Maitland had two goals and two assists, while Abby Rosenthal, Rieley and Flynn Hall each scored twice. Kristy Carlson made three stops to earn the win in net.

BOYS SOCCER

Champlain Valley 1, Rutland 0: Champlain Valley continued its early season winning streak with a 1-0 victory over Rutland in the Jay Bay Kickoff Classic at Essex on Saturday.

Jonah Roberts scored the only goal of the game with eight minutes remaining for the Redhawks, who moved to 3-0 with the win. Nate Coffin earned an assist on the play, while Aidan Johnson made eight stops to earn the win.

Earlier in the Jay Bay Kickoff Classic, CVU opened up tournament play with a 9-1 win over Rice on Thursday.

Chase Mitchell and Ivan Llona each scored twice for the Redhawks, while Oliver Martin, Roberts, Briggs Francis, Nate Sampson and Nick Durieux all tallied once.

GIRLS SOCCER

Champlain Valley 8, Rutland 0: The Champlain Valley girls soccer team finally got its season underway with an 8-0 rout of visiting Rutland.

Charlotte Hill paced the offense with three goals and an assist, and Ella Woodruff tallied twice for the Redhawks (1-0). Ali Bisaccia, Sara Kelley and Natalie Durieux each added a goal, and Syndey Jimmo had two assists.
