For Champlain Valley Union High boys junior varsity coach Seth Emerson, the 2013 season was a first.
Make that a nifty first for the coach and his team.
The Junior Redhawks rolled up a 14-0 record.
The big zero in the loss column was the first for Emerson in his three seasons at the JV helm.
Emerson said the squad’s winning formula was a sturdy defense, goal scoring by committee and, late in the season, a rotation of fill-in goalies.
“Grant Kelly, our regular goalie, got a concussion, so we had to use non-goalies at the position for the last five or six games,” Emerson said.
Taking what proved to be successful cracks at the pressure position were Kyler White-Hansen, Adam Hamilton and Brock Werner.
“We would rotate so each played one half a game” said Emerson. “They are athletic and basketball players. They all did a nice job.”
Todd Boisjoli and Owen McCuin were leaders on the offensive side along with Luke Manuier.
Emerson said Werner, when not between the goal posts, and Will Yakubik were among the solid forces on the field.
