That might be the weather wish from the S.D. Ireland American Legion baseball team, which got drizzled out of a partially played contest with the Colchester Cannons at the Champlain Valley Union High field Tuesday. This after the second game of a twin bill in Waterbury on Sunday was shortened by rain to five innings, with the Irelands on the winning side 7-4. Waterbury took the opener, 9-3. There was no score in the Colchester contest after two-and-a-half innings, when dark clouds produced at first a few raindrops and then a downpour with the entire thunder and lightning show. The storm brought a sudden end to the baseball action. The next outing for the locals comes Thursday afternoon at 5:30 against Addison at the Mount Abraham Union High field in Bristol. On Tuesday, coach Jim Neidlinger and his charges will be off to Glens Falls, N.Y. for a three-day tournament involving some of the top legion teams in the northeast. The Irelands will play two games Tuesday and a single contest Wednesday, followed by a pair of fixtures on Thursday. “There are some very good teams there,” assistant coach Onnie Matthews said. Against the Cannons, Irelands starter Justin Raymond threw three shutout innings, allowing four hits while walking two and striking out four. The Cannon’s Matt Goulet faced the minimum six Ireland batters in two innings, giving up a leadoff single to Raymond, who was cut down attempting a steal of second. Goulet, finding his heater, got swinging strike threes on all three batters in the second. It was expected the game will be resumed from the bottom of the third when the two teams are scheduled to meet again the night of July 15 at Centennial Field. In Sunday’s abbreviated, second-game victory at Waterbury, starter Sean Rugg hurled the five inning win while Drew Nick unloaded a round tripper to pace the offense. Nick was not the only green and gold guy with pop in his bat that day. In the first game loss, Raymond clubbed a two-run Big Jack and Anthony DeToma launched a solo blast.
