Way to go, CVU!

On June 5, Champlain Valley Union High School was awarded third place in the school category for the 2009 Way to Go! Commuter Challenge.

The award was given at the ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center at the Leahy Center for Lake Champlain. Since 2003, the annual, weeklong event has challenged commuters from cities and towns, businesses and kindergarten through grade 12 schools throughout Vermont to commute smarter by pledging to use cheaper, healthier and more earth-friendly transportation alternatives to driving alone. According to a Way to Go! Commuter Challenge press release, participation grew by 20 percent from last year, with 3,552 commuters across the state taking part in this year’s challenge and saving 236,813 miles, 10,516 gallons of fuel, more than $33,000 in total transportation cost savings and 213,000 pounds of transportation pollutants, including 206,000 pounds of carbon emissions.

CVU students, faculty and staff did their part to ensure a greener future by biking, walking, taking the bus and carpooling to school. CVU’s third place finish was based on the percentage of total school population that participated in the challenge, compared to that of other competing schools.

Honors for Center for Technology, Essex students

Elizabeth Goddette and Tanner Ose, Williston students at the Center for Technology, Essex, were inducted into the National Technical Honor Society earlier this year. Goddette studies Professional Foods and Ose studies Automotive Technology 2. The students were two of 53 inducted into the Honor Society from the Center for Technology, Essex.

Honor Society inductees at Rice Memorial

Seven Williston students who attend Rice Memorial High School were recently inducted into the Rev. Raymond A. Adams Chapter of the National Honor Society. Michael Reiss, Sean Hayes, Molly McClintock, Erin Steiger, Corey Clark, Jenna Durkee and Katie Fisher were among 42 students from Rice who were named to the National Honor Society. To be considered for the Honor Society, by the end of first semester junior year, each student must have a grade point average of at least 90, have served a minimum of 36 community service hours, been involved in school and community activities and demonstrate respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring and citizenship.
