A Wednesday night trip to St. Albans for a skating session with Bellows Free Academy started the week’s doings for the Champlain Valley Union High girls hockey team.
The game was scheduled for after press deadline.
The Redhawks return to the friendly home confines of Cairns Arena at 6 p.m. on Saturday to meet Spaulding High of Barre for the first time this season. Hartford High will be at Cairns this coming Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. face-off.
CVU took an 8-1 record on the road Wednesday after knocking 6-1-2 Essex High from the ranks of the undefeated Saturday at the Hornets’ nest in Essex Junction.
As she did three times this fall in CVU’s Division 1, runner-up, one-loss field hockey campaign, KK Logan scored the overtime-ending and winning goal in CVU’s epic 5-4 triumph. It was the senior forward’s 11th score of the season.
The dramatic triumph came after the Redhawks got zapped from the undefeated ranks a week ago Wednesday, 7-3 by the Missisquoi Valley Union High Thunderbirds in Highgate.
In the Essex game, CVU came roaring from a 1-0 deficit with four second period goals, led by Molly Howard with two (20 for the season) and Sophia Steinhoff (16 tallies) and Lizzy Betz with singles.
Howard set up Logan’s game winner in overtime.
Essex forced the overtime by scoring three times in the final nine minutes of regulation, aided by penalty calls against the Redhawks.
