The Williston/Richmond Rotary Club improved the weathered gravestone of Newell Cyrus Langeley last Thursday, dedicating a plaque at the former Williston farmer’s grave site in Morse Cemetery off Route 2A.
Langeley, an African American who fought for the Union Army in the Civil War, was born in Ferrisburg in 1827 and died in Williston in 1902.
Rotarian Reg Melrose of Williston gave a talk about Langeley’s life and dressed in Civil War-era garb. Two Williston Central School students played taps during the ceremony. For more photos, visit willistonobserver.com.
