After an intense tie against Essex High on Oct. 5 and 4-0 win against Mount Mansfield Union High on Tuesday, the Champlain Valley Union High School girls soccer team will face off against Colchester on Thursday.

The game, set for 7 p.m., is the second this season against the Lakers. When CVU played Colchester on Sept. 25, the Redhawks defeated the Lakers 4-0.

On Friday, CVU and Essex—the two top-seeded teams in the state—faced off for the second time this season. After two overtime sessions, the game ended in a scoreless tie. The Sept. 19 CVU-Essex game also went into double overtime, that game going to Essex 3-2.

“CVU dominated the play from the onset and rattled a shot off the crossbar in the first half and had a goal disallowed in the second half due to an offside call,” Coach Brad Parker wrote in an email to the Observer. “It was another hard fought match with limited scoring opportunities as both defenses played very well.”

CVU had 12 shots on goal, while Essex had four.

On Tuesday, goals came more easily for the Redhawks—Bronwen Hopwood scored the game’s first goal less than three minutes in. Hopwood and freshman

Catherine Cazayoux added two more goals to the tally, leading the Redhawks to a 3-0 half-time lead.

“In the second half a beautiful cross off of a direct kick by Kaelyn Kolash, deflected by Taylor Goldsborough onto the head of Paige Dubrul resulted in the fourth and final goal of the game,” Parker wrote.

CVU goes into Thursday’s game with a 9-1-1 record.
