Williston firefighters responded to a fire at a home on Hillcrest Lane at 2:27 a.m. on May 26. Early reports had smoke coming from the garage and spreading into the home. Firefighters found rags and several paint cans on fire in the basement stairwell of the garage. After extinguishing the flames, firefighters determined the rags combusted after being soaked in paint thinner.
Firefighter Ryan Prouty said unless paint thinner is diluted in water, it could heat up fabric and start fires. The homeowners had been painting the deck a day earlier, Prouty said. The garage and two cars suffered minor smoke damage.
Engines 1, 3, 4 and Tower 1 responded to the scene, along with 18 firefighters. St. Michael’s College Rescue Service also responded in case of any problems.
Firefighters responded to a car accident on Interstate 89 northbound at 6:04 a.m. on June 8. A Honda Accord rear-ended a Dodge Magnum, according to the fire department. The Honda apparently swerved on the highway, avoided the exit 12 sign and landed in a ditch on the left side of the road.
The driver suffered “moderate” injuries, according to Prouty. St. Michael’s College Rescue transported the driver to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. The driver of the Dodge was unhurt. The Honda was totaled. Eleven firefighters on Engine 3 and Hazmat 1 responded to the scene.
