Champlain Valley Union High School varsity coaches provide a glimpse of their teams for the 2013 spring season

September 5th, 2013

Cheerleading

Coach: Michelle Filardi

Years coaching: 4

Key returning veterans: Ashley Filardi; Taylor Filardi; Shana Leonard; Keller Longchamp; Kendra Maille

Leading newcomers: Jessie Johnson

Season prospects: We graduated six girls last year and have five new cheerleaders and an alternate. This summer, we had a challenging NCA camp at CVU with college cheerleaders. We are eager to cheer on our varsity football team. We will be cheering for walkers for the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Oct. 20 with the Essex and South Burlington cheerleaders. We now have a feeder team. This year, the CSSU Buccaneer football players will have fifth-eighth grade cheerleaders from all over the district.

Boys and Girls Cross Country Running

Coach: Scott Bliss

Years coaching: 15

Key returning veterans:

Boys: Zach Marshall; Clarke Shedd; Will Kay.

Girls: Autumn Eastman; Abby Keim; Emma Putre; Carly Neeld

Leading newcomers:

Boys: Louis St. Pierre; Casey Silk; Devin Cantor

Girls: Rachel Slimovitch; Maeve Higgins; Kestrel Grevatt; Evelyn Needham

Season prospects: Boys are young and have plenty of potential. The three returning runners are solid and should lead to a competitive team with the hopes of qualifying for New Englands. The girls return four of their top seven and the newcomers have looked very good. Should be competing for the Division 1 state championship.

Last year’s record: Boys second in the Division 1 state meet, 13th at New Englands. Girls state champions and third at New England Championships.

Boys Soccer

Coach: TJ Mead

Years coaching: 8

Key returning veterans: Zack Evans, senior center back; Joe Castano, senior midfield; Brandon O’Connell, senior goalie; Patrick McCue, junior midfield

Leading newcomers: Cooper O’Connell; sophomore back; Tawn Tomasi, freshmen back

Season prospects: Our defensive and midfield is still intact from last season. We graduated a lot of goals from last season. This season we will be looking for “scoring by committee.” The players came into the season very motivated and fit, looking forward to a challenging season.

Last year’s record: Last year our record was 16-1-1. We won the Metro League and the Division 1 Championship.

Season prospects: It is a wonderful group of players and people. The team is motivated and working exceptionally hard to see just how good we can be.

Last year’s record: Won State Championship.
