It’s a biggie coming up for the Champlain Valley Union High track and field team.
The Redhawks will be competing Saturday in the annual Essex Invitational, which has the added importance of being the qualifier for the New England Meet in June.
Last weekend it was the freshmen in action in a meet at South Burlington High that brought first-year competitors from 11 schools. In team scoring, CVU athletes took third in both the boys and girls division, the boys finishing with 82 points just behind runner-up Essex with 88. Host South Burlington won with 146.
On the girls’ side, Essex won with 177, followed by South Burlington with 103 and CVU with 60.
Leading the CVU boys was Tyler Marshall with victories in the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs. Calvin McClellan took second in the 3,000 and third in the 1,500.
Ethan Cote was victorious in the 110 hurdles and captured second in the 300 hurdles.
The girls also had three winning performances. Leah Berger won the 800-meter run while the relay teams took the 4×100 and 4×800.
Allison Kloeckner had third place finishes in the shot put and discus.
