The Champlain Valley Union High football program opens its sixth varsity campaign and second in Division 2 on Saturday, when Burr and Burton of Manchester comes to Hinesburg for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
The last time the CVU Redhawks took on the Bulldogs was last year’s season opener in Manchester. The result was a CVU blowout that started the Hawks on the road that wound up in the Division 2 title game.
This is a new season, however, with all of the unknowns that are present on opening day.
Head coach Jim Provost was generally pleased following last Saturday’s home field scrimmage against Spaulding High of Barre, played before a fair number of followers.
“We came out healthy,” the coach said. “We had some big plays but we need to become more consistent on offense, which should happen.”
Scatback J.P. Benoit and quarterback Konnor Fleming had plenty of enthusiasm as they looked ahead following the scrimmage.
“We have some awesome receivers,” said Benoit, who broke some long gainers.
Fleming was pleased with the offense and noted, “It will be good to get back into the regular season routine of school, practice and then home.”
“Now it is for real,” Provost said.
