Champlain Valley Union High Nordic skiers were playing host to a classic competition Wednesday after the Observer’s press deadline at Sleepy Hollow in Huntington and then will be into exams and away from more competition until Jan. 19.
Last week was a good one for the Redhawks, who racked up solid wins Saturday at U-32 in East Montpelier and performed well in relays on Wednesday at Montpelier.
At U-32, the girls took the team crown with 16 points to easily roll past nine other teams. Mount Mansfield Union took second place with 30 points. The CVU boys took first among seven teams with 16 points.
Leading the Redhawk girls was runner-up Taylor Spillane, whose time of 22 minutes and 26.28 seconds was 51 seconds behind winner Annavitte Rand of Mount Mansfield.
Spillane was followed by teammates Autumn Eastman in third and Cally Braun in fourth.
The boys packed six finishers in the top nine, led by race runner-up
Forrest Hamilton in 19:42.41. Redhawks Emmett Peterson (third), Cooper
Willsey (fourth), Marvin Muller (seventh), Parker Francis (eighth) and
Sean Delaney (ninth) followed.
“We did very well in soft snow conditions,” said Coach Sarah Strack.
Strack said the Wednesday relays went well despite the cold, which limited the events to a one kilometer loop.
