CVU/MMU girls ice Rutland; boys lose to Canadian school

The season started off with a bang for the Champlain Valley-Mount Mansfield co-op girls hockey team on Saturday.

CVU/MMU scored with 10 seconds remaining to earn a 5-4 win over defending champion Rutland at Spartan Arena.

CVU’s Jackie Ryan came up with the game-winner for the CougarHawks (1-0), while CVU’s Lydia Maitland added two goals. Katie Peck and Katie Bushwelller, also from CVU, also tallied for the co-op team.

MMU’s Joanna Wright made 24 saves to earn the win in goal.

The opener of the CVU boys hockey season did not go as well, as the Redhawks fell to Lower Canada College — a k-12 grade school from Montreal — by a score of 9-1.

Charlie Averill had the lone goal for the Redhawks, while Jake Schaefer and James Bernicke each added an assist. Logan Cody (33 saves) and Reed Dousevicz (12 stops) split time in goal for CVU.

Sam April had three goals to pace Lower Canada College.
