The CVU gymnastics team recently clinched a third-place finish in the state tournament.

The Champlain Valley Union High gymnastics team finished its season with a third place spot at the state meet, held Saturday.

“I am really proud of CVU Gymnastics this year,” Coach Madison Bourdeau wrote in an email to the Observer. “We became a team. We set aside practice time to set goals, write inspirational letters to our teammates, and have team dinners.”

Bourdeau said the team had its highest score of the season at the state meet.

CVU finished with 136.925 points. Essex High took the title with 142.35 points, and South Burlington High was second with 136.25 points.

“Not only was I extremely proud of these girls, but they were proud of themselves—and that’s all that really matters,” Bourdeau said.

In the team events, CVU tied with Essex for first place in the floor exercise segment, was second on the beam and third on the bars and vault.

Sophomore Asiana Giubardo led the Redhawks in the individual all around scores with 34 points and a sixth place finish, senior Jackie Casson was seventh with 33.85 points and junior Julia Higa ninth with 33.65 points. Sophomore Guinevere Giubardo was 12th with 31.65 points and freshman Rachel Hoar 25th with 28.5 points.

“Jackie Casson is our graduating senior—I couldn’t be more proud of her,” Bourdeau said. “She was on at states. Hit her vault, bars and floor routines and stuck beam. That’s a really impressive/hard thing to do in this sport and she did it.”
